Day Three of the 2012 NAMM Show

The third day of the 2012 NAMM Show continued to offer attendees more industry insight and business tips to take home with them, starting with a Breakfast Session called “The Top Web Marketing Trends for 2012” presented by John Arnold, marketing author and columnist at Entrepreneur.com.

The session demonstrated the best ways for companies to spend their time and money, and recognize the new technologies that are less likely to pay off. It also outlined how to start using tools such as social media, search marketing, mobile devices and marketing locally on the Internet.

As attendees filed through the convention center doors, they were greeted by the music of Polka Floyd, a tribute band with the unusual twist of an added accordion and a polka beat.

Meanwhile, the Hands On Training (H.O.T.) Zone offered numerous educational sessions focused on the pro audio, entertainment technologies and music business operations segments. Today’s sessions drew hundreds of attendees and included a Logic Pro Clinic, “Cloud Technologies for Pro Audio,” “Bass Players Summit-BX3 Revisited,” “The Virtual Recording Studio Program,” and “Lawyers, Deals and Money: Current Trends in Music Business and Law.”

The NAMM Foundation kicked off its “Music Education Days,” a program that provides an opportunity for music educators to interact with each other and music industry professionals to address mutual concerns about access to music education for all children. Today’s program included a welcome breakfast, a keynote session called “One Is Too Small a Number to Achieve Something Great,” presented by Marcia Neel of Music Education Consultants, Inc., and a session called “A Place In the Choir” presented by John Jacobson, a.k.a. Mr. “Double Dream Hands.”

The NAMM University sessions continued at the IDEA Center on the show floor, and included presentations on “How to Ignite Your Business In Five Minutes or Less!,” “Call Your Store and Change These Four Things Now,” “Monetize Your Facebook Page,” and “Financial Questions Every Music Retailer’s Afraid to Ask.”

Tonight on the main Lobby Stage, NAMM will proudly present the second year of its “Celebrity Jam” featuring the Band from TV Stars including Scott Grimes, James Denton, Greg Grunberg, Adrian Pasdar, Bob Guiney, Jesse Spencer, Anthony Ruivivar and others will show how much they love to play music when the cameras stop rolling.

Also tonight over at nearby Downtown Disney District, will be the finals of NAMM’s SchoolJam USA bringing together the best teenage bands in the country to battle for bragging rights and prizes for their band and their school music programs. The event will be co-hosted by teen pop sensation Greyson Chance and singer/songwriter Shaun Barrowes. The winning band will be announced tonight.

The show continues through tomorrow and will feature the traditional “Best In Show—This Year’s Hottest Products,” Breakfast Session with Frank Alkyer, publisher of Music Inc. and a panel of music products professionals sharing their best picks from the show floor this year.

Celebrity sighting included Tommy Lee, George Benson, Stevie Wonder, Donovan, Greyson Chance, Greg Grunberg, Scott Grimes, Bob Guiney, Chuck Lowery, Tinsel Korey, David Crosby, Shaun Barrowes, Maya, Joel and Benj Madden, and Jackson Brown.

Radiohead Rehearsals

The Radiohead appearance on the From the Basement TV series from the BBC is available in gorgeous, full hi-def video. The video features a full King of Limbs performance and drummer Clive Deamer playing with the band, along with an entire case of extra characters. From the Basement is a series of shows produced and recorded at Maida Vale Studios by Nigel Godrich.

Good news for those visiting the Radiohead tour in 2012 ... you're likely to hear new Radiohead songs: "We're trying to keep it creative. We've got new songs, we've been rehearsing about four or five new songs this week so we're going to try and take those on the road. It feels really good," said guitarist Ed O'Brien when speaking to XFM's Mary Anne Hobbs.

Radiohead singer Thom Yorke said the same thing back in October when in the U.S., speaking to Rolling Stone: "We can get things together quite rapidly at the moment," talking about a new song titled "Come to Your Senses." "We have this version of it. It's a five-minute rehearsal, but it has the essence of what we need. There are a few of those. It would be fun to have them ready when we go to play next year. I don't know how we would release them."

Flo Guitar Enthusiasts at Hothouse Rehearsal Studios

A special thanks to Jeff Floro of The.Flo.Guitar.Enthusiasts Joe Mazzeo, of the Grumps, Henry Cendejas, and JimmyRay Hawkins for bringing all the gear and playing on our video. You guys are the best. Joe built a custom switch for us to change speakers at a moment's notice, besides putting all those speakers in all those cabinets. An amazing collection of vintage and new speakers were assembled. Henry brought in some amazing amps and everyone loved his EVM 12L cabinet. It sounded amazing. JimmyRay brought a couple of guitars he assembled which sounded amazing and played some awesome stuff which really showed the differences between the speakers. The edited video will be coming soon, and some surprises.

Here’s an outtake of the video…Joe Mazzeo, of the Grumps, warming up before performing for the video.. He is playing his Jackson through a Ceriatone Chupacabra 50 watt head through his Marshall 4x12 cabinet with Celestion Greenbacks.

Blendin Ashes – Wanda Video

We have been fortunate to watch as the band Blendin Ashes has grown from their first rehearsal here at Hothouse Studios to now producing this very nice video for their song “Wanda”.

TV Hostess Agostina Fusari & Paulina Garces star in this fun wacky adventure of a man who is in love with an illegal alien, only to find out that he's not alone. Everybody else wants her and he has to share the love for his bride to be... also starring Esther Anaya, Onia Nevaeh, Lanea Amick and Ash Soliman.

Blendin Ashes is a mixture of rock, reggae, Spanish and pop music. The band hails from Los Angeles, California.

Jessy and the band featuring Eric Mondragon on keys, were working on Jessy’s new material off her NEW release “HOT SAUCE”. I’ll tell you Jessy has talent, chops, and originality.

Winds of Plague Blow into Vans Warped Tour

Winds of Plague stopped by on Monday to go over some transitions before taking off to Dallas Texas for the official start of the Vans Warped Tour, on June 24^th, 2011 at the Superpages Center. Check out their tour dates section at facebook and let them know who's coming out!

After rehearsal Jon and I started talking as he waited for the trailer to arrive. During our conversation the topic of rehearsal volume came up and I commented “how it was good to hear the band keep their rehearsal volume at the right levels and how their power was coming from their synergy and not from volume”. Jon said “Oh yeah I agree, we keep our volume low so we can communicate with each other, and you’re right our power comes from arrangements of the songs.” I second that motion.

Out of the Box Charity
Helping Children through Music, Art and Love

Friday night Out of the Box Children’s Charity launched it fundraising activities with an awesome event, held in Studio 1 here at Hothouse Rehearsal Studios. It was inspiring to see, there are still people who care about the well being of others and do something about it on a person to person basis.

The fundraiser featured and an exhibit of local artists and their art work. A giant thank you to Chad Fuchs, Alyssa Camacho, Cindy Benson, Walter Valladares, Roxy Arana, Thomas Padilla and Melinda Martinez for sharing your artwork with us.

Our good friends in the band Messenger provided the live music entertainment for the event goers between the mission presentations by the directors of Out of the Box Children’s Charities. Big Thank yous, to the member of Messenger: Melinda Martinez- Vocals/Guitar, Fletcher Allen- Lead Guitar, Justin Jerz- Bass and Wes Hawkes-Drums.

The night would not have gone so seamlessly if not for the help of Brittany Huggins and Benny Gutierrez. Thank you both for all your efforts.

Johnny Vatos Boingo Dance Party
Begin Show Rehearsals

Johnny Vatos and the Boingo Dance Party have begun rehearsals for their forthcoming shows at The Galaxy Theater, Santa Ana, CA on May 7, 2011 and at the The 4th & B, in San Diego CA on July 22, 2011.

Rehearsals began last night in the auditorium (studio 1) and the group is in top shape. The music is happening and the guys are having a great time joking and laughing with each other.

Thanks Johnny for thinking about us as your rehearsal space to prepare for the shows.

College gigs are the stepping stones to the bigger scene. However, if you talk to a few people who have followed this path, they will eagerly tell you what a painful process it is. It is true that booking college gigs can be painful sometimes, but not if you follow the guidelines given below.

The first step is to put together a promo package or an EPK. Secondly, you need to get in touch with the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA), The Association for the promotion of campus activities (APCA) or a booking agent that is associated with the above mentioned organizations. The third option, hiring a booking agent, could be costly if you are an emerging artist or a band.

Once you submit an application form to NACA or APCA via their website for a fee, you will be granted membership. Thereafter, the journey becomes a bed of roses because these two organizations will guide you through every step of the way. If you are concerned about the financials, it is a good idea to check their official websites for membership fees, validity period and renewal fees.

Winds of Plague back at Hothouse Rehearsal Studios.

The Southern California purveyors of pain and our good friends WINDS OF PLAGUE were back in the new bi-amped studio 1 here at Hothouse Rehearsal Studios thumping the new subwoofer s while rehearsing for their upcoming tour.

After annihilating the masses on the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Fest throughout the summer of 2010, WINDS OF PLAGUE now prepares to further spread their carnage across North America on The Warped Tour in the summer of 2011. This is a huge opportunity for the band to perform in front of a different crowd while definitely bringing something unique to this festival to separate themselves from the pack. Expect big circle pits and one of the most energetic performances of the day.

Winds Of Plague has become one of the frontrunners of a new breed of metal over the past few years. The band has sold nearly 100,000 records and made countless laps across the globe, building a massive fan base and earning a reputation as one of the heaviest hitting live shows around. Now, after the massive success of 'The Great Stone War,' Winds Of Plague are returning with a brand new album.

Friday January 21, 2011 Troy High School in Fullerton, Ca will be holding a fund raising Battle of the Bands at Plummer Auditorium in Fullerton, 201 E Chapman Ave Fullerton, CA 92832 (714) 626-3890. The show starts at 6:00pm is an all ages event and the ticket cost is $7 at door. Special guest performance by Dramarama.

All proceeds benefit the Troy Special Ed. Department. John Easdale of
Dramarama and Richard Morales owner of Hothouse Rehearsal Studios will be 2 of the 5 judges, judging the contest as well as playing a few tunes. Hothouse Studios is sponsoring the prizes for the event.

Troy High is well known for being one of the top 30 High Schools in the country, as well as having the #1 computer science program in the world, yes, the world. What is less known is that Troy has a stellar, absolutely second-to-none Special Education Department.

The teachers, staff, and administrators not only do what they can to help make high school the rewarding academic experience it should be, but they also give an enormous amount of their hearts and time to help give the students in the Special Ed program many social and recreational opportunities--dances, parties, camping trips, Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, trips to San Diego things that typical high school kids take for granted.

In the past, the department was able to raise their own funds to pay for these adventures so that there was zero or minimal cost to students--many of whom are in foster care or group homes and would otherwise be unable
to attend--but the rules have changed and they are no longer able to
raise these funds themselves. The Troy ASB has graciously agreed to give the proceeds from the Battle of the Bands to the Special ED Dept.

Ronny North 2011 NAMM

Our long time friend Ronny North will be all over NAMM again this year. If you are there, go say hi and tell him Hothouse Studios sent you.

I thought I'd give everyone the update on Ronny’s NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) schedule for this week. He’s looking forward to seeing everyone at his performance when he headlines the NAMM kickoff event on Jan 12^th, 2011 at the Hilton at the Anaheim Convention Center and at the show every day.

He also has some cool new RN stickers and promo 8x10's to sign... when you see him at the show just come up and ask for one, if you want him to sign a photo, not a problem. As most of you know Ronny is always up for getting his picture taken with everyone at these events so if you wanna get a shot together with Ronny, so not a problem. All you have to do is ask. What Is A Rehearsal? Defined and Explained

Studio 1 The Auditorium

Let's go all the way back to the academic definition of music rehearsal first: “Rehearsing a musical composition often involves repeating some passages over and over again until everyone in the ensemble (band or group of musicians) masters them.” Well that's the core of rehearsing, its main foundation... the one that no matter what, you should always comply to.

But music has changed much since these academic days, now rehearsing exceeds these acts, and combines more tasks in itself.

First you should agree that a focused band is the main requisite for a decent rehearsal.

Secondly, be aware that a group rehearsal (or ensemble rehearsal, as stated in the opening definition) is not your practice room or music instrument class! Don't go into the rehearsing studio to develop your individual skills or train your finger position and so on... that's homework mate! Musicians should be prepared for rehearsing as a group and reviewing the tracks over and over is practically the only way to achieve the sound that you want.

Ø Discussion and Analysis

But rehearsing isn't all about playing the part or song silently from start to stop. The meaning of rehearsing hides another concept vital in today's bands: Discussion and Analysis.

When you train a track or a part of it, let’s say from the bridge to the chorus, over and over you are perfecting it, and most of the times “perfection” is about getting it right and playing it smoothly... but there are cases in which, during rehearsal, minor changes to the tracks can happen. A slight change on a note's duration or its pitch can occur when musician calmly discuss and present their point of view on that segment of music being analyzed.

So it’s all about maturing your own product, and that comes in many shapes and flavors. As stated above you can perfect the way all of your band members play their part of the songs, you can perfect the way vocals and back vocals line up and double themselves on the chorus, and many more slight corrections like these, but another thing you can mature is the way the band performs. That’s where the stage-like rehearsal comes into play.

Ø Show Rehearsing

A common practice for bands (and a really important one for bands) is Show Rehearsing. This is, playing your entire concert song list, from start to end and even the “encore” if you’re feeling lucky. This will point out mistakes and problems in your band that you don't want to experience live and also helps you to test the concert song list.

Which problems are these you say? Just play the entire song list and you'll see.

The drummer is tired because track 3 is up tempo and is followed by another really fast tempo song. The bass player needs to switch to percussion in track 6 which leads to enormous waiting time (crowd's hate that), and it gets worst, where you find out that playing all the tracks sequentially can be hard work. So by using these practices in rehearsing you'll definitely get near to perfection, which is the purpose of it.

But remember a crucial aspect: mastery of technical skills DOES NOT replace feeling when playing.

In the other hand, besides Show Rehearsing you have several styles and types of rehearsing and some common practices.

Ø Common Practices

For drum players you should always use a metronome while rehearsing difficult songs (particularly if at the start you're not feeling the tempo, or if the signature is a composite, i.e.: 7/4, 5/4, 3/4, and so on).

Bass players and drummers should build up a strong concept of rhythm section. If need be they could take some time on their own and practice the bass lines and rhythms. And then accordingly to you own band formation, there's several ways to enhance your performance.

Lets’ divide these practices into a small list, with sub-topics:

Ø Rhythm section

As stated, both bass and percussion elements (drummers, conga players, etc...) should work considerably close. That makes a band consistent and the groove becomes solid.

Work with metronome if any of the musicians is not feeling the tempo, but be sure to disconnect it when everyone is groovin'.

Ø Keyboard players

Piano, synth, and so on... Please note that you carry a massive harmonic instrument. It lays down the tune, so be sure to keep the score in mind and practice it a lot.

To synth players or organ players, keep an eye on the tempo and the rhythm section and learn their breaks and tempo changes.

Ø Vocalists

Vocalists play a huge role in today’s music. Lyrics hold certain meaning and messages, which are important in the context of a song/album.

If you're working with vocals and background vocals be sure to reserve some rehearsing time to this. Many times the chorus needs to change because of background vocal integration.

Also, a new trend is to use effects on the voice, so if that's your case, choose some nice gear (foot pedal) and some powerful harmonizer effect machine, and rehearse that part over and over. (You don't want to mess up effects in real time).

Ø Wind instruments

Wind sections should always work together (reeds and brass), and if you have/can, work with the piano score (transposed to your instrument, of course) and keep it well rehearsed. If needed take some time to rehearse this section alone.

Ø Various instruments

It's not possible for this small list to incorporate every instrument possible, so for all of the other instruments. Take the general advises and seek more at other sources, such as maestros or music teachers or even your band members.

Just a final note for those that play solo or play solos in their band. Solos take a huge time rehearsing and should be done in your own individual studio time or at home. When rehearsing with the band be sure to have your solos worked out.

On Camera Rehearsal

If you are familiar with the Movie School of Rock, you can imagine how an on camera rehearsal could benefit a band. This type of rehearsal is pre-planned, with someone bringing in the video camera. If possible, a TV should be brought in as well to watch the video right afterwards. What are the benefits of doing an on camera rehearsal?

Ø It’s an official dress rehearsal which includes being dressed.
Most bands don’t do “dress rehearsals” that include being dressed for the part but if you are videotaping, even if just to review everything, the clothes should be included. You never know when you will need filler for a music video later!

Ø The moves you think are cool may not be/you think you are moving and your feet are glued to the floor.
Another big reason for the on camera rehearsal is to make sure everyone looks good jamming out. Many times, a band is into their music and it looks great but occasionally you will have that one band with that one guy that is over the top and insane compared to the rest of the band, like Jack Black’s character in School of Rock, for example.

Ø To Avoid Clichés
There are so many “rock” clichés that avoiding them all is impossible. With that said, trying to avoid some of the egregious ones is an important part of your presence.
By videotaping, you can tell whether you or your band mates are doing anything too weird and zany. Often times, you will do things and not even realize it while on stage.

Chicano Soul Legends Little Willie G and Thee Midniters in Concert

Big shout out to our good friends Little Willie G and Thee Midniters. The guys were in rehearsing for their Christmas show “Hot 92.3 Winter Wonder Jam” at the Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk in Universal City, CA this Saturday December 18, 2010. It is going to be a great show with Tierra, El Chicano and Malo also performing.

Indisputably the greatest Latino rock band of the '60s, Thee Midniters took their inspiration from both the British Invasion sound of the Rolling Stones and the more traditional R&B that they were weaned on in their native Los Angeles.

I got hear the entire set during rehearsal and Thee Midniters are going to blow you away. Thee Midniters will be performing all their hits “Land of a Thousand Dances”, “Whittier Blvd.” and more.

Starving for Gravity the Melodic Rock group out of Orange County, Ca has been one of our favorite bands since they first began rehearsing at Hothouse Studios and lit up the place.

Now Lucas (vocals), Brad (guitars), Dee (bass), Richard (keys) and Mark (drums) have been voted one of the Top 100 Best Unsigned Bands in the U.S. by Music Connection Magazine in their 19th Annual “Hot 100 Live Unsigned Artists and Bands Poll”.

In addition to the Music Connection staff, freelance journalists, club bookers and other industry professionals determine the results. This is a great accomplishment earned by Starving for Gravity and validates their talent and artistic quality.

10 Amazing Musical Instrument iPhone Apps

We’ve highlighted 10 great iPhone apps that provide a darn good musical experience on your handset.

Whether you’re looking to strum, blow, shake, tap or hum, here are the apps that’ll do it for you, and all of them offer more than just a novelty experience. With this many musical instruments available for $4 or less, why not get a few friends together and start a band?

1. Pocket Guitar

If you can get your fingers around the average fret board, you’ll likely find this app easy to pick up, once you get the hang of touching rather than picking. With six guitar sounds to chose from (including the ukulele for any George Harrison fans out there… anyone?) you can customize the sound to go acoustic or electric, as well as adjust the distortion and the accelerometer effects, shown off nicely in the video above. There’s also a setting for southpaws (lefties), and best of all, calloused fingertips are a thing of the past.

2. Drum Meister

It’s no secret that drummers are always the coolest member of the band, and not just because they can sit down for the duration of any concert. Give the drummer inside you an outlet with this app that lets you create your own sweet set of skins, customize their placement and size, and set the type of sound you want to create. Similar to Drum Kit but better looking, and with the ability to record even in the free version, it’s another example of an instrument done very, very well. The free “Lite” version gives you a super-cool, super-simple interface for banging away on a custom kit from the get-go.

3. Virtuoso Piano Free 2

There are a plethora of piano apps available for the iPhone, but we like this super simple version, and not just because of its zero price tag. With a really nice sound emulating a concert grand piano, download this and you’ll be tickling the virtual ivories in no time at all. You can chose to have the keys labeled with the notes or not, and there’s the ability to “roll” the keys for a quick thrill. The app displays eight keys on the iPhone’s screen, and you can use the slider bar above to scroll higher and lower through the six available octaves. You’re not going to be able to play Stravinsky, but we managed to bash out a fairly tuneful rendition of Chopsticks.

4. Harmonica

We’re going to come right out and say that the idea of holding this to your mouth is a bit dumb, as your breath just fogs up the screen, and dangerously so depending on how long you play. But as a music app, it works great with just touch. The looks are clean and simple and the interface is fab. There are 12 keys to choose from, and in “free play” mode, the touch of a large button turns a blown note into a drawn one. There’s another button to play a chord, and you can change the strength of a note by how closely to the edge of the screen you press.

That’s not all, however; there’s also the option to learn one of the many pre-loaded songs with a wicked Guitar Hero-style game. Playing notes as they come down the screen makes for a mega-fun mini-game in its own right.

Cost: $0.99

5. Bebot – Robot Synth

Don’t let the retro robot fool you into thinking Bebot is a just a gimmicky app — it actually offers a fully-fledged real-time synthesizer. While our electro-music skills only managed to glean a bit of robot fun, the longer and more in-depth video demo above from synth superstar Jordan Rudess will show you just what the app is capable of — and it’s pretty impressive stuff. The app boasts four independent “voices,” including a wicked Theremin effect that provides some great spooky music. An option to record your warbling would be very welcome in a future update.

6. iBone – The Pocket Trombone

iBone quite simply offers a master class in musical instrument design for the iPhone. It works on so many different levels. You can pick it up and have fun playing, but if you know your way around a real trombone, you’ll actually get a virtual instrument. As well as blowing into the iPhone’s mic (or an iPod touch’s mic via an add-on, such as headphones), you can move the slide with your finger, or just hit the notes on the app’s background screen. In addition to playing along to a tune from the iBone songbook, you can also select a tune from your iPhone’s music collection to add some ‘bone too. Death metal works particularly well in our experience.

Cost: $1.99

7. Pocket Shaker

Despite a rash of bad reviews in the App Strap, we love the Pocket Shaker app for fulfilling the percussion-in-your-pocket needs we didn’t even know we had, and all for free. As well as the requisite cowbell, there are maracas (which you shake the phone to activate), bongos (or conga and tabla drums if you’re being pedantic), and many more presented in a photo-realistic interface with a scrolly bit beneath that’s really easy to navigate. If you ever wanted to play the agogo on the go-go, then look no further.

Cost: Free

8. Ocarina

Smule’s Ocarina has a well-deserved place in the iPhone app hall of fame with its rank as an all-time top paid offering. In addition to wowing on launch with its then innovative use of the mic and touch screen, and addictively simple musical style (that has spawned a user generated online song book), the app incorporates social elements, such as the ability to hear Ocarina performances from around the world within the app via a great globe interface. Although its gentle, flute-like sound may not suit fans of say, punk rock, it’s a must for those with a penchant for ethereal wind instruments — and of course, Legend of Zelda fans.

Cost: $0.99

9. Jug Band

Jug Band has you well covered on the folksy or alternative music side of things with an app that offers a washboard, kazoo, the spoons, and of course, a jug effect. The washboard works via the touch screen, the spoons just as in real life, and the kazoo and the jug by humming into the mic (or external mic in the case of the iPod touch). If you can get past the irony of playing a 99 cent app on an expensive gadget in order to emulate the sound of home-made instruments, then it’s great fun.

Cost: $0.99

10. Bloom

As a new musical instrument created for the iPhone, Bloom is hard to describe. In the words of co-creator and famed musician Brian Eno, “Bloom is an endless music machine, a music box for the 21st century. You can play it, and you can watch it play itself.”

If that’s clear as mud, then the basic idea is that you tap the screen to generate a pattern of sound (shown via colored bubbles). Left alone, Bloom will then continue to repeat and “evolve” the tune, while you can jump back in at any point to expand the pattern or shake the phone to clear it. If ambient music isn’t your thing, then back away now. Otherwise, dive in for an addictive experience that will chill you right out on the morning commute.

I had a very cool experience at the studio the other day. I got to meet Jeneane Grotewiel prior to her photo shoot. Jeneane and I had this wonderful conversation. Not just chit chat either. Jeneane is an enormously talented artist with a fun and yet still serious personality. We hit it right off. I just love it when I meet wide open people not afraid to express themselves. Jeneane is one of them.

2010 'Best In Shred' Guitar Competition at Sam Ash Music Stores

I’ve had a great time judging the 2010 'Best In Shred' Guitar Competition at Sam Ash Music. Every contestant from every round is a winner in my book, just for entering the competition.

Sam Ash Music, America's premier full-line music store chain, is on the hunt for America's greatest unknown guitarist. The battle is underway with the contest is moving into the final rounds. Challengers from across the United States are competing to win $20,000 in valuable musical gear and the opportunity to perform live onstage with legendary guitarist Steve Vai.

I’ve been judging at the Puente Hills (City of Industry store) in California. The store finals took place at 7:30PM on Wednesday, November 10^th2010. Now the store championship featured the four semi-finalists still standing from previous elimination rounds. At the City of Industry store the four semi-finalists were:

Jessie

Chris, and

Jonathan.

I sat on a panel of 3 judges (Chris, Elrick and myself) and we scored the players on their technical skills, originality, accuracy, and showmanship. The competition was intense. The guitarists performed live in front of an enthusiastic audience playing along to one of six instrumental backing tracks of Steve Vai songs.

The consensus winner is:
Al Estrada.

Runner-up:
Jessie Hunter.

Congratulations Al. He won an amazing amount of gear. As I recall over $1,000 worth of pedals, recording gear, strings, a Line Six guitar amp and other items, plus an Ibanez guitar. Sam Ash is truly generous.

What I liked about Al’s performance started before he even began playing. He was asked to lower down his amp. What I saw him do showed me he understood all the components of his gear. I could see he didn’t want to turn down his amp because he had a particular tone he was going for. So instead he went to the gain knob on his pedal board and lowered his volume there. Exactly.

Once he started playing what I saw and heard was an original, thought out performance. You could see Al had rehearsed his performance and the song he played for us with his lead guitar work was executed precisely. His guitar playing showed his understanding of the craft. He did this kind of Jimi Hendrix part in the performance where he got on his knees and played some very cool licks and he pulled it off in rhythm which made it look effortless.

Another side note of worth about Al was he was ready to perform faster than any of the other players and he also got off the stage faster than any other player. Even his set up and tear down had been rehearsed. Well done.

My experience judging for Sam Ash Music in the 2010 'Best In Shred' Guitar Competition was fabulous. Store manager Paul Delaney along with his assistant store manager Mike Lovett were a pleasure to work with. As I wrote earlier Sam Ash is very generous and they gave all the judges gifts as well. A really cool Zoom H1 Handy Recorder. Brilliant Stereo Recording that fits in your pocket. Thank You Paul and Mike.

Store champions are going on to compete regionally in Orlando, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and Charlotte on December 8^th 2010. All six regional champions will win over $1,500 in guitar gear prizes from Ibanez Guitars, Morley, Line 6 Amps, Electro-Voice, Jim Dunlop Products, Samson Technologies and Zoom Effects.

Regional champs will be flown to Los Angeles to compete in the grand finals on January 12^th 2011. A panel of celebrity judges will determine who is crowned Sam Ash's "Shredder of the Year -- 2010."

Jamaica performs Gentleman at Hothouse Rehearsal Studios

We had the pleasure to host Jamaica an emerging band from France as they rehearsed for their world tour which started in with 13 dates in the U.S. and then off to Europe. I really liked this song "Gentleman" off Jamaicas' new album "No Problem" and Antoine and the band were kind enough to let us in to video tape them while they rehearsed it.

Strengthen the Family Unit with Music Rehearsals

There is something special when families use our rehearsal space to practice their music, have fun and at the same time strengthen the ties of their family unit. What a cool thing to be part of that.

The Abellera family and Hothouse Studios has been building our relationship, since we opened the studio doors 7 years ago. I can remember JoJo bringing the kids in to jam for the first time. Justine was only 11, Bryan was still a baby and A.D. had just become a teenager. Boy did they have fun. The kids were so excited.

Now Bryan is playing the drums, Justine is right out front leading the group on guitar and vocals and JoJo (dad) is still playing those bass lines. Watch this video of them covering the Bruno Mars song “Just the Way You Are”.

John Lennon 70th Birthday Celebration In Hollywood

Saturday marks what would have been John Lennon‘s 70th birthday and in his honor, the Alliance for Survival peace and environmental group is sponsoring a birthday celebration at his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in front of the Capitol Records building on Vine St. in Hollywood.

Here is the schedule for the celebration:

8:00 AM – Sidewalk chalk artists gather at John’s star, then begin creating Lennon and Beatles-themed murals around perimeter of Capitol Records Tower Building.

11:30 AM – 100-foot long “John Lennon 70th Birthday Message Scroll” will be started for the public to inscribe personal messages. (The scroll will be sent to Yoko Ono).

11:30 AM – Face Painting Table (for kids and young at heart).

11:30 AM – Lennon star polished by longtime star polisher and Lennon fan Dennis Garling.

12:00 Noon – The Beatles “They Say It’s Your Birthday” echoes over the sound system and the program begins!

12:05 PM – Welcome- Jerry Rubin, Event Coordinator

12:10 PM – Violinist and vocalist Lili Haydn performs “Imagine.”

12:15 PM – Vocal group The Three of Us performs “In My Life.”

12:20 PM – Singer Jordan Zeigler performs “Beautiful Boy” (Dedicated to John and Yoko’s son Sean, who was born the same day as his dad and is turning 35.)

12:25 PM – Everyone sings “Happy Birthday” to John and Sean.

12:30 PM – Sidewalk chalk artists introduced.

12:35 PM – Cake-cutting ceremony led by Chris Carter. Lennon and Beatles songs echo over the sound system as fans enjoy the specially decorated cake.

1:45 PM – Closing Circle at John’s star as “Imagine,” “Give Peace a Chance” and “Love is All You Need” echo through the crowd.

2:00 PM – Birthday Celebration concludes. Fans are invited to gather again at the same location on Wednesday, December 8 at 6:00 PM for the free-to-the-public “John Lennon 30th Annual Memorial Candlelight Remembrance.”

Ambrosia Rehearsals

Friday, Ambrosia locked out “the auditorium” and it was like a bit of heaven dropped by for the day. The guys showed up for rehearsal one at a time which was perfect, cause I got to personally greet Shem, David, Burleigh, Chris, Joe and Doug as they arrived. They were all so gracious and welcomed me into their group.

Like all the seasoned players that rehearse here, set up was a breeze. The guys are completely organized and through planning and practice they know exactly how to set themselves up. Mixing the sound board was cake because they told me exactly what they needed. Preparedness it’s a characteristic I’ve noticed in all the successful people I meet.

When the music began it was like listening to the stereo. Each song alive and breathing, each note precise, each vocal harmony on the button, each song so balanced. I left the door to the hallway open all day so I could enjoy the music.

During rehearsal breaks I really got to meet everyone. The conversations were like the ones I have with my childhood friends, so easy with no pretense. Joe and I even talked about our families from Spain that was very a very cool connection.

Everyone that dropped by noticed the quality of the songs and the musicianship and asked me “who is that in the studio”. For the privacy of the band I always just say “some real professionals aren’t they awesome”.

It’s amazing how fast time passes when you’re listening to good music while you work and I was sad to see the guys leave at the end of the day. It sure seemed like Burleigh could sense this and he assured me they would be back because the guys told him they loved place. He even gave me a hot off the press, one of kind Ambrosia T-Shirt. I was stoked.

Messenger Live at the Sunset Room

I had an amazing experience Thursday night. I went to watch Messenger, one of our favorite bands that rehearses’ here, perform at a restaurant/bar called the Sunset Room in Hacienda Heights. I had a blast!

Messenger’s two hour set began with Melinda solo on acoustic guitar performing original material and covering some of her favorite songs. She had the crowding mesmerized.

The band took the stage and the sounds of Messenger filled the club. The crowd loved their music and loud applause ended every song. Patrons got up and started dancing and the place was hopping with energy. Messenger put on a dazzling show.

The Sunset Room is a throwback to a better time when music venues didn’t make the band pay to play. Here is the amazing part…the Sunset Room pays the band to be the live entertainment for their patrons. That’s right, they pay the band. They know the value of live music

The Sunset Room offers an upscale ambience with a laid back vibe. They have a well rounded menu and every Thursday emerging bands take center stage and the dinner crowd is there enjoying their meal and the live music. I just loved it.

Get your songs played on KCRW Los Angeles Ca.

I read this revealing article in the online edition of the L.A. Times.
“Five ways for indie musicians to get their songs played on the
Los Angeles California radio station KCRW”.

In this article Eric Lawrence from KCRW tells us how to submit

As the music librarian at KCRW, his job is to dive into the
hundreds of albums sent to the Santa Monica station every week and surface a handful of CDs to place on a row of compact wooden shelves in his library. And it is these shelves that the station's 25 DJs and producers turn to to figure out what to play next.

That's because the public radio station has a reputation for being a tastemaker, with its fingers on the pulse of independent music trends poised to be the next big thing. It's one reason why music directors in Hollywood troll the station for new music to include in their television shows and movies.

As a result, the station gets anywhere from 200 to 400 unsolicited
albums each week. Lawrence listens to every album and makes a
record of whether it is added to the library or rejected. Of those,
only 30 to 35 albums are chosen.

"I view my job as putting ears to every single record sent to us,"
Lawrence said. "Anything sent to us gets some amount of attention."

That's a lot more than you can say for just about all the
commercial radio stations with 10 times the resources.

Lawrence doesn't want people to think he's the all-powerful magical genie that dictates all the music that airs on KCRW. In fact, the station's DJs are free to play whatever they want. It just turns out that much of what they spin comes from the shelves that Lawrence diligently maintains in the station's library

"I tend to think of myself rather as a genial Santa Claus-like
character who can make a very merry Christmas for some artists,"
Lawrence said.

We interviewed Lawrence, who has been at KCRW for 17 years and hosts his own show on Sunday nights, and asked him how artists can boost the chances of their CDs ending up on those hallowed shelves, alongside the Dead Weather, Arcade Fire and Massive Attack. Here are his five tips:

1. Make it personal. Don't waste money on fancy folders, glossy
photographs and premium packaging. All of that ends up in the trash without so much as a backward glance. Instead, write a personal note and stick it on the jewel case. Address the person by name and say why the music fits with the station's vibe or the show you'd like it to play on. Lawrence recalls seeing a handwritten note from an artist, referencing some songs he played on his show. "They took the time to know me, so I took more time to know them." If it's an album, call attention to its best tracks. "There's no way we can listen to the entire record," Lawrence said. "We tend to sample two or three. So go ahead and recommend a track or two."

2. Get experienced. Prodigies aside, the station prefers to see
artists get some experience under their belts before giving them
exposure, Lawrence said. Get some gigs. Get mentioned in a music
blog. Build a fan base on MySpace, YouTube or Twitter. "When we
play a record, we're putting our stamp of approval on it. And we
want to make sure the artists are in a position to take it to the
next level. We want them to be serious about their careers."

3. Make sure the songs are "radio ready." Don't send tunes that
are recorded in a garage with an ambient mike from Best Buy, unless that's part of the sound. "Audio quality is the key," Lawrence said. "When we play our sets, the songs all have to flow together. If your song is thin and skeletal, it will sound under produced next to the other songs around it that are more polished. It doesn't have to be big or loud. It just has to have good audio quality."

4. Include relevant (and legible) information. What's relevant?
Contact name and number, song titles, credits, guest artists and
notable producers. It's best to have the information on the jewel
case as well as the CD itself, in the event the case gets lost.

Drop the elaborate fonts and just make sure what's there is
legible. "If I can't read it, I'm not going to play it," Lawrence
said.

5. Send a CD. For now at least, the KCRW library is primarily
disc-based (it has more than 60,000 CDs and 15,000 vinyl discs).
All of the music is digitized, backed up and archived, but the
selection presented to DJs is currently CDs stacked on shelves,
Lawrence said.

Even digital files sent to the station are burned onto discs, if
they make the cut. The problem then is that the disc becomes
divorced from the album art that may have accompanied the digital file. And while you're at it, don't bother hand-delivering CDs to the station or stalking DJs. Many of those discs get lost in the shuffle.

The most reliable way of getting someone at the station to
listen to the music is to send it in the mail. That way, it flows
directly into Lawrence's queue. For those who don't know it, the

Brazilian Street Carnaval holds Rehearsals at Hothouse Studios

Studio 1 "The Auditorium" at Hothouse Studios

Final rehearsals for the Brazilian Street Carnaval were held yesterday in the auditorium and the studio was overflowing with rhythm and energy.

The drum beats and the dancing is infectious and it spilt over into all the rehearsals here at the studio. Everyone was coming and going with a little dance in their step and telling us what a great rehearsal they had. Positivity is that way.

Join our close friend David de Hilster as he puts on the 13th Annual Brazilian Street Carnaval at the Promenade Downtown Long Beach, Ca on September 19, 2010. Gates open at noon and the event closes at 9pm. This year’s theme is Brasil Moderno.

It’s reasonably priced, it’s all day, there will be two parades, 3pm Rio Style and 5:30pm Tri-Electrio, where everyone can join in. The entire Promenade will be filled with food and cultural booths. A giant stage with have continual music and dance performances. You won’t want to miss this event.

13th Brazilian Street Carnaval Returns to the Downtown Long Beach Promenade September 19, 2010

Long Beach, California, August 18, 2010 – SambaLá Samba School and Contemporanea Drums announce the 13th installment of the Brazilian Street Carnaval taking place on Sunday, September 19, 2010 from noon to 9 pm on the downtown Promenade in Long Beach California. This year's event features a Rio-Style Parade at 3:30 pm, a Trio-Electrico Parade at 5:30 pm, and Brazilian bands, food, and booths all day. Headlining the entertainment for this year's event is SambaLa Samba School, Made in Bahia, Pagode with Cupim. Other groups include Samba 4 U Bloco, Capoeira Centro Sul, Natalia & Daniel, Raiz Brasil Dance Troupe, TMA Music, and Zumba. Proceeds for the event benefit children in Brazil via the charitable organization "Casa do Caminho" located in Rio de Janeiro state. Organizers have rolled back prices to help out in this recession dropping $5 off prices from 2 years ago.

Everyone is invited to parade in one of the two parades that take place on the downtown Promenade in City Place between 5th Street (at Wal-Mart) to Broadway. There is a $10 fee to parade in the Rio-Style parade and costumes are for sale, for rent, or you can wear your own with approval by the parade director. The parade will include 150 dancers, 25 drummers, a float, a sound car, and dozens and dozens of beautiful samba dancers in feathers and bikinis. Costumes are being designed by Long Beach Carnaval Artist Doris de Hilster and choreography by top samba dancer and instructor Valeria Ruggieri, both of who exhibited their skills this year to over 40 million people world-wide in the 2010 Rose Parade in and around the Jack-in-the-Box float.

This year's carnaval theme is "Modern Brazil" (Brasil Moderno) which is features in the Rio-Style parade with the theme song composed and sung by Brazilian Renni Flores with the drum arrangement by Rodney De Assis. The theme song can be found on the internet at song.carnaval.org.

The Trio-Electrico (Bloco) parade requires the purchase the purchase of a T-Shirt along with admission ($25 in total prior to the event, $30 at the gate). Those with the T-Shirt can fall in line behind the sound truck and follow the fun and dance moves. The Bloco T-Shirts were designed by Rio resident Igor Leal who is a carnaval artist and composer living in Rio de Janeiro.

Attendees are invited to bring new small or medium-sized toy for Casa do Caminho charity in Brazil.

General admission is $15 prior, $20 at the gate. Bloco T-shirt admission is $25 prior, and $30 at the gate with VIP all-points passes going for $50 prior and $60 at the gate. There are private tents available for groups of 10 also available at $500 prior to the event. Seniors and students get a $5 discount. Lost 80’s Live Roars at Hothouse Rehearsal Studios

Thursday night all of us at the studio were witness to an incredible concert rehearsal in studio 1 “the auditorium”. We had the privileged of hosting tour rehearsals for 80’s powerhouses: When in Rome, Real Life (just in from Australia) and The Escape Club.

The Escape Club performed their number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart "Wild, Wild West" then fresh in from Melbourne, Australia Real Life breaks into an incredible version of "Send Me an Angel" then our good friend Rob Juarez and When in Rome started playing "The Promise" their monster single from their self-titled debut album. “The Promise” was an instant success, barely missing the Top Ten in the United States, peaking at #11.

The Lost 80’s Live show with When in Rome, Real Life, The Escape Club, The Motels, Animotion, A Flock of Seagulls, Dramarama and Gene Loves Jezebel just performed this weekend to sold out shows at the Mandalay Bay Hotel (The Beach) in Las Vegas, Nevada. The reviews of the show are awesome.

We thank two of our oldest and dearest friends, John Easdale of Dramarama and Johnny Vatos of Oingo Boingo for recommending us to their friends.

Pre-Production Rehearsals Saves You Cash

Whether your band has had no gigs or one hundred, making the decision to record an album is an incredibly big and important step. Bands cannot book good gigs without a demo of some sort at the very least and the best way to get your fans to come see you again is with the constant reminder that only your CD playing in their car can do.

When the decision to record is made by a band, there needs to be a timeline put in place for recording and a lot of work needs to go into making sure that when you get to the recording studio you can be as efficient as possible. By doing your homework ahead of time, you can save yourself quite a bit of money once you get into the studio.

The Life and Times of Hothouse Rehearsal Studio

Every day brings the most wonderful people to the studio for example:

Quantum Wave brought the kids tonight! Five of their offspring (ages 9 - 14) have been practicing at home for some time. Tonight they came and sang and played at the Hothouse for the first time and they did very well. I think this must have been the youngest drummer I've seen here (age 9), he told me he's been playing since he was 6. Rock on!

I talked to Charles (Spanglish) for a while tonight. He has this audio job that sends him to Kuwait for a few weeks and then back here for a few weeks alternating back and forth so this is where he's been.

Kokoro bought us a small pizza tonight for our efforts we do for them.

Southern California metal outfit Antagonist has completed work on their new album and has announced "World In Decline" as its title. The band recorded at Buzzbomb Studios in Orange, CA with producer Paul Miner (Terror, Thrice, Throwdown). Antagonist released "Exist," their Prosthetic Records debut in 2008, and had two previous full-lengths and several EPs.

Singer/guitarist Carlos Garcia commented on the forthcoming album: "We've just wrapped up the making of our new album with Paul Miner. We're super stoked on the finished product, and we hope everyone will feel the same! Paul was amazing to work with, he was very encouraging and super patient with us, and we're eternally grateful for that. And of course, he knows his way around the console. This is honestly the first album we've done that is an accurate representation of Antagonist's live sound, and it definitely showcases a more refined, aggressive sound. We're taking it back to the old school!"

Garcia also commented on the overall sound of "World In Decline": "'Exist' had a hopeful message of working together as humans towards a better future. The new album is about the realization that things will always be fucked up, people will always be selfish, and this world is going to end at any minute, and we have nobody to blame but ourselves. People grow older and figure out that life doesn't get any easier and that our own selfishness, carelessness, and ignorance are at the core of our demise. So right now, that's where our heads are at, which will in turn no doubt lead to a much more aggressive and angry album."

Starving for Gravity Interviewed by Performer Magazine at Hothouse Studios

Our good friends in the band Starving for Gravity were interviewed by Performer Magazine last night in studio one (the auditorium) here at Hothouse Rehearsal Studios. The interview was fantastic. Part live performance (which they rocked) and part sit around and talk about their new album and the future of the music industry and how they fit into it. One of Music Connections “Hottest 100 Artists” Starving for Gravity recently performed live at the Covenant House, a Hollywood, CA, facility that serves homeless and at-risk youths. It was the first live performance ever held there in a room created via a substantial donation from Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx. The premiere event was attended by many of the residents and staff of the Covenant House. Starving for Gravity not only entertained the group for almost two hours, they answered questions and allowed a couple kids to play along with them.

Music News from Hothouse Rehearsal Studios

This week began with news of the passing of a metal legend, Ronnie James Dio, who succumbed to stomach cancer at the age of 67. As testimonies poured in from artists and fans alike about the talent and humanity of the former Rainbow/Black Sabbath vocalist, other music legends were remembered, as well. Martin Scorsese announced his plans to release a George Harrison documentary next year, and McCartney says the Beatles would have reunited.

Remembrances and Tributes Pouring in for Ronnie James Dio

As news of the passing of Ronnie James Dio continues to spread throughout the music world, legions of the singer’s musician-peers are posting tributes and remembrances on their websites. The heavy metal giant, who had been battling stomach cancer, died Sunday at 7:45 a.m., as reported by his wife, Wendy Dio, on the singer’s official Facebook page. Musicians ranging from Slash to Ozzy Osbourne to Ritchie Blackmore have posted comments, many of which we have gathered below:

Tony Iommi (Played with Dio in Black Sabbath and, recently, Heaven and Hell): “I’ve been in total shock I just can’t believe he’s gone. Ronnie was one of the nicest people you could ever meet, we had some fantastic times together. Ronnie loved what he did, making music and performing on stage. He loved his fans so much. He was a kind man and would put himself out to help others. I can honestly say it’s truly been an honor to play at his side for all these years; his music will live on forever. Our thoughts are with Wendy Dio who stood by Ronnie until the end, he loved her very much. The man with the magic voice is a star amongst stars, a true professional. I’ll miss you so much my dear friend. RIP.”

Geezer Butler (Played with Dio in Black Sabbath and, recently, Heaven and Hell): “Goodbye, my dear friend.”

Ritchie Blackmore (Rainbow colleague): “Ronnie had a unique and wonderful voice. He will be sadly missed in the rock and roll world.”

Scorsese Plans George Harrison Film for 2011

During an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, Martin Scorsese told The Hollywood Reporter that his George Harrison documentary should come out next year.

For the past three years, the famous director has been developing the project with Harrison’s widow, Olivia. Tentatively titled Living in the Material World: George Harrison the documentary will cover the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s life before, during and after The Beatles.

Scorsese said he met Harrison multiple times during his life, and felt connected to his quest for spirituality.

“That subject matter has never left me,” Scorsese said. “The more you’re in the material world, the more there is a tendency for a search for serenity and a need to not be distracted by physical elements that are around you.”

Paul McCartney Says Beatles Would Have Reunited

Paul McCartney feels certain The Beatles would have reunited in recent years, at least for a one-off show, had all four members survived.

In a lengthy interview published Sunday, May 16, by Scotland’s Daily Record, the 67-year-old legend said, “It could’ve happened. We were asked to do reunion gigs shortly after we broke up. There wasn’t any point. It was like, we’ve just split. I also had Wings, so I was a bit busy doing other things. It wasn’t really a good idea then, but I think if this much time had elapsed, I could easily see it happening.”

McCartney went on to say not a day goes by that he doesn’t think about his late bandmates, John Lennon and George Harrison. He also said he always considers what Lennon would have thought of his work, as he’s composing.

“Now, if I write a song, I’m always cross-checking in my mind, ‘Would John have let me write that line, or is it just too soppy?’” McCartney said. “Sometimes, I just think, ‘Too bad, it’s my song.’ But I’m always cross-checking with him.”

At one point last night we had a Rock-a-Billy band, two Rock bands, one Salsa band, and one Surf band all rehearsing at the same time. Everyone at the studio was trippin’ on this variety!

But this isn’t unusual at Hothouse Studios. Our studios are so flexible we can accommodate a solo artist with backing tracks in one studio while in the next studio a 30 piece swing band is rehearsing for its’ Vegas show.

SambaLa Samba School and Contemporanea hold Drum Workshops with Master Rodney de Assis at Hothouse Studios

SambaLá Samba School and Contemporanea are holding a 12 week Samba Drum Workshop with Brazilian Master Percussionist Rodney de Assis Saturday’s beginning May 8, 2010 through July 31, 2010 from 2 - 4 pm at the Hothouse Studios in Santa Fe Springs California.

Students will learn all the traditional samba instruments including surdo (base drum), caixas (snare drum), repinique, chucalho (shaker), agogo (bells), and tamborim (finger drum).

Rio native, Rodney has played Brazilian percussion professionally for over 30 years in Brazil, Spain, and now in the Los Angeles area. Rodney directed samba school percussion in Spain for 20 years and was recently brought to the Los Angeles area by a talent agency for his world percussion skills. Soundcheck Nashville
Damaged in Flood Waters

Soundcheck Nashville

This past weekend Nashville, Tennessee was hit with over fifteen inches of rain causing the worst flood of the town in the past 150 years. Downtown Nashville and the music industry have been greatly affected by the Cumberland River overflowing its bank.

Our brothers and sisters at Soundcheck Nashville, one of the largest tour rehearsal spaces in the United States, and all the bands rehearsing or storing equipment there have fallen victim to the flood and the facility is currently two feet under water from a high of 5 feet this past weekend.

Located in East Nashville right on the banks of the Cumberland River Soundcheck is a sprawling complex which accommodates a host of musicians, ranging from session men to outright superstars.

Water is no friend to musical instruments and when I heard about the flood, the thought of the water bending hundreds of wooden instruments made me cringe. I can’t imagine how much priceless gear of all kinds has been damaged.

While the loss of an original ’59 Les Paul, a Tweed Fender Bassman or the mixing console from Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush sessions is no tragedy in comparison to the loss of human life, these are the tools with which many people make their livings.

The news is that several major artists and tours have lost all or most of their instruments and production gear. This could affect tours throughout the summer and also delay album releases from big names in the industry.

Transatlantic

Daniel Gildenlöw, Mike Portnoy, Pete Trewavas, Neal Morse and Roine Stolt

Last week was a mind blowing week here at Hothouse Studios. Progressive Rock Super Group Transatlantic featuring Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy, Neal Morse of Spock's Beard, Marillion's Pete Trewavas and Roine Stolt from the Flower Kings locked out studio one (aka the auditorium) to rehearse for their world tour in support of their newly released reunion album "The Whirlwind".

Almost a decade has passed since their last live appearance together but this spring Mike, Neal, Pete and Roine found a nice little window in their schedules to make this world tour happen. To our great fortune the wait is finally now over and the Whirld Tour 2010 is on its way. Daniel Glidenlow of Pain of Salvation joined the guys as an additional touring member for the tour and the rehearsals were intense and fun all mixed in time.

With The Whirlwind, Transatlantic has pulled out all the stops! Their first two albums expanded the boundaries of Progressive Rock with songs like 'Stranger in Your Soul' that spans some 30 minutes. Then, nine years later the band comes back with a walloping triumphant record that is one piece of music sprawling over 78 minutes in length! This is unprecedented, and the sheer brilliance of it is that it flows like a Progressive Rock symphony, taking the listener from shadow to glory and back again. What a tremendous whirlwind of music this is!

The show at the Downey Theater was phenomenal as they performed to the note the entire new LP Whirlwind as the opening song.

Alex Lopez the drummer with Suicide Silence put out this instructional (drum lesson) video to show his fellow drummers hit by hit how to play the bands song “Wake Up” from Suicide Silence’s second album No Time to Bleed. This video shoot was commissioned by Modern Drummer Magazine and was shot in studio one here at Hothouse rehearsal studios.

Alex has been part of the community of musicians and artist that rehearse here at Hothouse studios since we opened back in October of 2003 and it is an honor that year after year Alex uses studio 1 (the auditorium) to shoot his “drum lesson” for Modern Drummer Magazine. Thank You Alex!!!

Don Bell and Liquid Soul

Performance Rehearsal

Your band has lined up a gig, thankfully with plenty of notice and time to promote. You realize you have plenty of songs to choose from; more songs than you are going to be allotted time for. What do you do?

You should plan on making most of the rehearsals before your show “performance rehearsals”. Think of them like the rehearsals a cast of a play or musical put on. As you close in on your gig date, you should be getting closer and closer to playing like it’s the real deal.

For our example, let’s assume that band ABC has 4 weeks’ notice and typically practices twice a week.

4 weeks before the show:

Believe it or not, this is going to be the toughest week of the four leading up to your gig. Band ABC was writing music thinking they were going to have to play an hour for their show but landed a local music showcase gig that only requires a 30 minute set. Unfortunately, that means they won’t be able to play all of their songs. The tough part of this week is choosing which songs they are going to play.

The first rehearsal should be devoted to getting song durations down. A stopwatch is incredibly handy, as is a white board. Band ABC has their song names already written down on the white board so it’s just a matter of playing them and having someone write down how long each song is. They know that their normal set, start to finish, is almost an hour; now they know how long each song is so they can add up times to hit 30 minutes.

Band ABC is not using any type of click track or metronome for their drummer so they make a point to take the time and write a second time beside it that is roughly 10 percent shorter to account for gig adrenalin and nerves causing everyone to want to push the tempo. (They even lament the fact that they aren’t using a click track for this very reason.)

All the band members then make their own list of songs that makes 30 minutes of music. The fun part begins with the negotiation that it is going to take to pick the right songs that will knock the socks off the crowd as well as keep the musicians happy. This process may extend through to the next rehearsal but by the end of week 4 a set list needs to be figured out.

3 weeks before the show:

During the first rehearsal of week 3, the band runs the new 30 minute set then discusses where breaks need to be placed. The lead guitarist expresses a need to switch guitars so that break is added (and noted on the white board). The set also has a couple songs that seem to feed right into each other so that is also noted. They rehearse the breaks and the transitions from one song to the next.

The second rehearsal, before they start they make sure everyone remembers how they are doing the new transitions and make a point to rehearse them before running the set a couple times. The band members begin walking away feeling confident.

2 weeks before the show:

The second week should be devoted to working on stage presence. The “front man” of the group, typically the singer, needs to pretend there is a crowd and practice getting the crowd pumped up between songs, getting the crowd jamming during songs and making it seem like this is not the band’s first show. The guitarists and bass player need to make sure they are moving around and not standing in one spot playing their lines flawlessly but with little flair or facial expression.

The goal of week 2 is to make sure everyone can play their lines while truly “rocking out” like they intend to on stage. Many a band has sounded horrible during their live show due to extra moving around, whether it’s playing or tripping over cables.

Band ABC practices in a very nice rehearsal facility with great lighting that dims, (like hothouse studios), so during the 2^nd practice of the week they dim the lights, more like a night club would have, to make sure everything runs smoothly in a low light situation. If your practice studio doesn’t have dimmers on their lighting, bring in a couple of lamps from your homes, turn off the studio lights and work the set in low light that way.

The week of the show:

Band ABC has practiced religiously for the past three weeks. They are confident and secure in their playing. They decide to only practice once this week. They run the set one last time with a couple of trusted friends there for a crowd and also to get feedback. They work out the one little quibble that their friends mention…the guitarist took longer than everyone thought switching instruments, they adjust and run the set again, except with better filler to mask the guitar change. They are happy and incredibly secure in their playing.

They make a point to pack up their gear that night so all they have to do the day of the show is show up at the gig. This lets them have one less thing to do the day of the show and keeps them fresh and ready to blow the crowd away with their set.

This day I shot the video segments of the guys that Japanese TV show Metal Gathering requested for the TV promos of the Tour. There is a big TV show over in Japan called the Metal Gathering and they need video assets for the commercials they are running for the songs of Randy Rhoads tribute shows. We shot openings and closings to the show and 12 segments of interview type material. Very educational.

This rehearsal studio is a go to studio for us. Whenever a garage is unavailable we like to treat ourselves to a practice at hothouse studios. Their inhouse gear is great, Aquarian Super Kicks and Sabian B8s. Quality drum stuff and great bass amps. The service is great with the staff eager to please and the rooms are spacious and clean. One more thing anyone can appreciate is the AC!

Hot House Studios has been my exclusive rehearsal space since its inception in 2003 when there were only a couple of rooms. I refuse to personally book rehearsal anywhere else. The cleanliness, professionalism, and kindness of this staff has made it into what it is today. And always being able to speak to the owner, Richard, as a FRIEND, has always made it a better experience. No other studio compares to this place. And if you are one of those that just thinks that AMP Studios in N. Hollywood is the be-all end-all of rehearsal studios, then you are in for a rude awakening. Once you try Hot House, you'll say Amp-who?

This is one of the best rehearsals around, not just because I know the owner, but because everyone is treated with special care. You need something while you are Hothouse Studios, just say the word and one of the managers on duty will jump all over it. If you have never been to hothouse you will want to make a point to check it out. practice your vocals, go crazy with the awesome drum kits, hold a class, do a photo shoot, this place is the leading multipurpose facility for the entertainment industry, and you never know what famous person might be walking the halls. It's the best kept secret!

Troy High School Battle of the Bands Fundraiser

Today February 4, 2010 Troy High School in Fullerton, Ca will be holding a fund raising Battle of the Bands at Plummer Auditorium in Fullerton, 201 E Chapman Ave Fullerton, CA 92832 (714) 626-3890. The show starts at 6:30pm is an all ages event and the ticket cost is $10 at door. Special performance by Dramarama.

All proceeds benefit the Troy Special Ed. Department.
Dramarama will be judging the contest as well as playing a few tunes. Hothouse Studios is sponsoring the prizes for the event.

Why is Hothouse sponsoring a high school fund raising event? First, Hothouse Rehearsal Studios supports education for our young people and especially the great work being done at Troy. Secondly, Hothouse Studios was established to help our local talent achieve their goals. Thirdly, Hothouse Studios is a community business and supports the community through fund raising activities such as this.

Troy High School is the alma mater of Social Distortion and what great group will emerge from this year’s Battle of the Bands is anyone’s guess. Come on down to the show and take a look for yourself.

Troy High is well known for being one of the top 30 High Schools in the country, as well as having the #1 computer science program in the world, yes, the world. What is less known is that Troy has a stellar, absolutely second-to-none Special Education Department.

The teachers, staff, and administrators not only do what they can to help make high school the rewarding academic experience it should be, but they also give an enormous amount of their hearts and time to help give the students in the Special Ed program many social and recreational opportunities--dances, parties, camping trips, Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, trips to San Diego things that typical high school kids take for granted.

In the past, the department was able to raise their own funds to pay for these adventures so that there was zero or minimal cost to students--many of whom are in foster care or group homes and would otherwise be unable to attend--but the rules have changed and they are no longer able to raise these funds themselves. The Troy ASB has graciously agreed to give the proceeds from the Battle of the Bands to the Special ED Dept.

KTLA Battle of the Bands & Hothouse Rehearsal Studios

Here’s how Hothouse Studios continues to help our musician friends. This time around we entered the concept video we produced for Ronny North’s new single “Tomorrow is Burning” into the KTLA Battle of the Bands Contest.

I went to the submit tab at ktla.com/battle typed in the information, uploaded the video file from my hard drive clicked the submit button and it took around 15 minutes to upload. So wait don’t get inpatient let the file upload.

We are encouraging all our friends to enter this contest. Why not, if you have a video of the band already produced submit it and enjoy the fun. The deadline is this Friday February 5th, 2010.

2. CONTEST DATES:
The contest begins at 12:00:01 a.m. PT on January 27, 2010 and ends at 5:00:00 p.m. PT on February 21, 2010. Any entries submitted after 10:00:00 a.m. PT on February 5, 2010 will be disqualified.

3. HOW TO ENTER:
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. A PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING.

a. Beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. PT on January 27, 2010, go to www.ktla.com/battle and follow the instructions to complete the entry form and upload your video (including performance of an original song) via online submission. You must provide all information requested on the entry form, including the name of the band, the name and age of each band member, a contact for the band, including name, age (if not already provided) , address, telephone number and valid e-mail address, and the uploading of one digital video showcasing the performance of your band (maximum of one song) (the "Entry Materials"). Video must be in one of the following formats and NO GREATER than 200MB in size:

• mp3

The song and video must be the original composition and performance of the band. There will be only one entry per band. You must have a valid e-mail account in order for your entry to be eligible. Videos that are altered or electronically enhanced in order to substantially misrepresent the contestant or the subject matter will not be considered and will be disqualified. Sponsors reserve the right to disqualify those entries that (i) contain offensive or inappropriate material, which are deemed by the Sponsors to be unsuitable or (ii) based on third party's claim alleging copyright infringement or a misappropriation of likeness. Entries will be accepted until 10:00 a.m. PT on February 5, 2010. Any entries submitted after 10:00:00 a.m. PT on February 5, 2010 will be disqualified.

b. By entering, the band and all band members warrant and represent that the Entry Materials (i) include an original composition of the band and all rights associated with the Entry Materials are the sole property of the band (or its authorized representative); (ii) do not/will not violate or infringe any intellectual property rights, including but not limited to copyright, trademark/trade name, or contract rights, or any other proprietary rights of any person or entity; (iii) do not name, describe or depict any person or character, dead or fictional, except for the individual or band member entrants; (iv) are the sole and exclusive property of the band (or an individual member of the band who was given authority and rights by the band; and (v) do not defame, libel, or slander anyone or any entity, do not contain offensive, vulgar, obscene ,racist, sexist sexually explicit, harmful or profane content, and in no other way violate any applicable laws, as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion. Entry Materials that do not comply with these Rules shall be disqualified.

c. Incomplete or late entries will be disqualified and KTLA is not responsible for online entries that are lost, late, incomplete, garbled, deleted, or misdirected as a result of technical, internet, server, or other online difficulties. In the event of a dispute regarding the identity of an entrant, the holder of the e-mail account will be deemed the person who submitted the entry. Limit one entry per band or e-mail address. No member of one band entrant may be a member of any other band entrant. Subsequent entries from the same email address will be deleted. Multiple entries from the same person or band will be disqualified. All entry information becomes the property of Sponsor and will not be returned or its receipt acknowledged. The person listed as the contact for the band shall be the sole contact for purposes of receiving information and notifications in connection with this Contest. That individual will be responsible for all dissemination.

4. ELIGIBILITY:
Only bands not currently under contract with any recording label are eligible. Entries from bands currently under contract with a recording label will be disqualified. This contest is void where prohibited by law. This contest is open only to legal residents of California, and each band member must be 18 years of age or older as of January 21, 2010. Employees of Sponsors and their parent corporations, subsidiaries, or affiliates, and such employees' immediate family or household members are not eligible to enter or win the contest. The band must consist of at least two people that perform regularly for hire at places of public accommodation (e.g., "working stage bands").

Entry Materials should feature music from one of the following genres:

• pop
• rock
• country
• R&B
• reggae
• folk
• rap
• alternative

Entries not featuring video/audio that fits within one of the above-referenced musical genres above will be disqualified, and such determination will be made in Sponsor's sole discretion.

5. PRIZE AND WINNER SELECTION:

a. On February 5, 2010, all eligible entrants will be reviewed by Sponsor. Sponsor will select semi-finalists on the basis of vocals, music ability, stage presentation, and overall entertainment value. The Entry Materials of all semi-finalists will be displayed at www.ktla.com/battle at some time after 10:00 a.m. on February 5, 2010, and before 12:00:00 a.m. on February 8, 2010.

b. Beginning at 12:00:00 a.m. on February 8, 2010, the public will be allowed to go online at www.ktla.com/battle and cast votes for the Entry Materials of the semi-finalists. Voting on semi-finalists will end at 10:00 a.m. on February 11, 2010. The five semi-finalist Entry Materials that receive the highest number of votes during the voting period outlined above will be deemed "Finalists".

c. Between February 15, 2010 and February 19, 2010, the Finalists will have the opportunity to perform on the "KTLA 5 Morning News" which airs from 4:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. PT. Finalists must be available to appear live on the "KTLA 5 Morning News" on at least one day between the aforementioned dates. Finalists who are unable to appear between the aforementioned dates will be disqualified. Alternate finalists will be chosen from the pool of semi-finalists at the sole discretion of the Sponsor based on the criteria set forth herein. An on-air performance is not guaranteed; Sponsor may preempt or cancel the performance at any time for any reason in its sole discretion, and in such event, no substitute performance opportunity will be provided.

d. Beginning at 5:00:01 a.m. PT on February 15, 2010, the public will be allowed to go online at www.ktla.com/battle and vote for one of the five Finalists . Voting for Finalists will end on February 21, 2010 at 5:00:00 p.m. PT. The Finalist with the highest number of votes will be deemed the "winner". In the event of a tie, KTLA will choose a winner at random from among the finalists who received the highest number of votes.

e. The winner will earn the title "KTLA Battle of the Bands Winner". Sponsor also reserves the right, but is not required, to provide additional products and/or services as part of the prize package at their discretion. Prizes are awarded as is, with no warranty, representation or guarantee, express or implied, in fact or in law, by Sponsor.

The contact person for each entrant agrees to act as the winner's representative and to be responsible for all federal, state, and local taxes associated with the prize, as well as all other costs or expenses associated with the prize, including, but not limited to travel and incidental expenses (including but not limited to travel to the "KTLA 5 Morning News") Odds of becoming a semifinalist depend on the number of entries received and the decision of the Sponsor. Odds of semifinalist becoming a Finalist and Finalist becoming a winner are determined by vote.

Prizes are not transferable or redeemable for cash, and prize substitution will not be allowed, except at the sole discretion of Sponsors. Sponsors reserve the right, but are not required, to substitute a prize of equal or greater value for the prize in the event the prize listed herein is canceled, postponed or unavailable for any reason.

6. GENERAL CONDITIONS:

a. By entering, entrants grant to Sponsor an unlimited, non-exclusive, royalty-free right and license to publish entry submissions (including photos, songs and videos) in any medium now known or hereafter invented, in perpetuity. Entrants and Winners otherwise will retain all rights to their videos, and the publication and/or broadcasting of their videos as part of this Contest will not limit their use and ability to further market the images. Sponsor reserves the right (but is not obligated) to post entry submissions online at www.ktla.com or broadcast the photo on KTLA Channel 5.

b. If for any reason, this Contest is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, tampering, fraud, technical failure, or any other cause which corrupts or threatens the administration, security or integrity of the contest, Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to terminate, modify, or suspend the contest or any portion of the contest. ANY ATTEMPT TO DAMAGE OR UNDERMINE THE FAIR AND LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THIS CONTEST WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION FROM THE CONTEST. Information submitted in Internet entries, including entrant's name, address, e-mail address, etc., may be used by KTLA TV for marketing or promotional purposes.

c. Sponsor reserves the right to delay contest announcements, postpone or reschedule all or some of the contest events, and/or modify Contest deadlines at its sole discretion. Any such changes will be announced and posted on the Sponsor's Contest website.

d, By participating in this contest, entrants (including all band members) (i) agree to have their bands, band member names, photographs, voices, biographical information, likenesses, and entry submissions (including photographs) used in any and all media for promotional purposes relating to this contest or future similar contests without further compensation or notice, except as prohibited by law; and (ii) represent that they agree to be bound by these rules and the decisions of the judges and to release Sponsors, their parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, directors, officers, employees, and agents from any and all liability for any injuries, claims , losses, or damages of any kind caused by any prize or resulting from their participation in this contest and their acceptance and use of any prizes won.

7. OFFICIAL RULES AND WINNERS LIST:
