How to Avoid a Band Breakup
Many bands that make it to the top have aspirations to go even further. However, the unfortunate truth lies in the fact that over time most bands break up. There are only a few bands today that have remained together over a long stretch of time, but the majority of them have gone their separate ways for one reason or another. There are numerous reasons why a band may decide to breakup, and recognizing these warning signs beforehand may help you and your band members avoid a messy scenario. Here are a few reasons on why a band may breakup and some tips on how to avoid this fate.
Drugs and alcohol can be one of the most unfortunate reasons
For a band breakup.
Remember "The Doors?" Jim Morrison and "The Doors" were one of the greatest bands back in the late 1960’s. Their rise to fortune and fame came quickly, but at a heavy price. When all seemed to be going good, the ingenious Jim Morrison had larger ambitions and used drugs and alcohol to drown out his pain. Eventually, "The Doors" broke up right before Morrison left for Paris with his girlfriend. The terrible death of Jim Morrison in Paris back in 1971 followed the deaths of two other superstars at the time: Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. The reason: drug overdose. Although Morrison died in his Paris bathtub from apparent heart failure, it has been conceived that this was due to his excessive drinking and drug use. Drugs are completely avoidable, and this is what makes them so tragic, when a band member becomes hooked. Every band loves to party to some extent, but knowing when to limit yourself is important. Communication comes back into play here. Being open and honest with your band members creates unity, even in situations, when someone is having a drug problem. Catching the problem early is also important, however you may not always recognize the initial warning signs to drug abuse. Have regular band meetings and talk openly with one another about how everyone feels. Travel and long playing hours can take their toll and lead to an avalanche of stress that can be difficult to overcome. When someone’s stress level rises he/she is more likely to turn to a substance to dull the pain. Talk about ways to reduce stress and maybe even scheduling time off during a long concert road trip. It’s the little things that matter here and some small sacrifices can result in big rewards! Click here to read the entire article.
