SambaLa Samba School and Contemporanea hold Drum Workshops with Master Rodney de Assis at Hothouse Studios

SambaLá Samba School and Contemporanea are holding a 12 week Samba Drum Workshop with Brazilian Master Percussionist Rodney de Assis Saturday’s beginning May 8, 2010 through July 31, 2010 from 2 - 4 pm at the Hothouse Studios in Santa Fe Springs California.

Students will learn all the traditional samba instruments including surdo (base drum), caixas (snare drum), repinique, chucalho (shaker), agogo (bells), and tamborim (finger drum).

Rio native, Rodney has played Brazilian percussion professionally for over 30 years in Brazil, Spain, and now in the Los Angeles area. Rodney directed samba school percussion in Spain for 20 years and was recently brought to the Los Angeles area by a talent agency for his world percussion skills. 3. Perform with the SambaLa bateria on September 19, 2010 at the 13th annual Brazilian Street Carnaval in Long Beach.

All levels of playing are welcome. Students are encouraged to bring their own samba instruments or can use those provided by Contemporanea.

Classes are held every Saturday starting May 8, 2010 through July 31, 2010 from 2 - 4 pm at the Hothouse Rehearsal Studios, located at 11823 Slauson Avenue, Santa Fe Springs, CA 90670.

Cost is $15 per class or $45 for 4 classes.

Bone Yard Drums and Hothouse Rehearsal Studios have been working together since Bone Yards’ owner Pat Cottle and I first met. I can’t tell you how long Pat and I have known each other it seems like I’ve always been friends with Pat. It’s one of those cool, easy friendships.

I do remember the first time I met Pat. I heard this really fine drumming emanating from one of the studios, so as I often do, after his session completed, I complimented him on his drumming technique. During that conversation I learned not only could Pat play a set of drums he also had a vast knowledge about drum repair and maintenance.

Well, up until this time I was maintaining all the drum kits here at the Hothouse. If you haven’t maintained a drum kit before, (cleaned it, put new skins on it, tuned it, etc…) then you probably don’t realize, it takes hours of time to go through just one kit. So I asked Pat if he’d be interested in taking on this task.

At first Pat was changing the heads and maintaining the drums here at Hothouse Studios exclusively. One day he came to me with the initial idea for Bone Yard Drums. I thought it was a wonderful idea. We started brainstorming that very day and I’ve been honored that Pat has sought my advice in these early developmental stages of Bone Yard Drums.

Now Bone Yard Drums has burst onto the drum rental, drum cartage, drum repair and restoration scene and this rapid growth is being fueled by two things; Pat’s honesty and integrity. Hothouse Studios seconds that motion.
