Has Music Lost its’ Premium?
by Richard Morales

I was told this story about a month ago by a member of a touring band that rehearses here at the hothouse. They had just got back from a month long tour so he was filling me in on how it went. During our conversation I asked him how sells for their new cd went. The next words out of his mouth frightened me. He told me about one encounter where a fan came up for an autograph and he asked the fan if they’d be willing to buy a cd. The fan said “no I can just download it for free.” At that moment, he said he felt beaten down, like his music had no value.

That story got me thinking about all the young artists and musicians that rehearse here at the hothouse. Will they be able to make a career out of music? How can they get paid for creating their music if people think music is just for free nowadays? Who is buying music? How can the studio help?

I’ve been researching this area of thought ever since that day. I’ve been discussing this topic of free music with everyone that is willing to talk to me about the subject. The first of a few articles on this subject is in the band toolbox at the hothouse studios website.
Check it out here.
