EMI Music, the world's third-largest music label, home to recording artists such as the Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, Coldplay, Norah Jones, Yellowcard, the Beastie Boys, Garth Brooks and Keith Urban, has reached and agreement that will allow users of YouTube, the most- popular video-sharing Web site, to watch music videos from EMI artists and include clips from them in videos created by YouTube users.
YouTube now has permission to host videos from the top four music companies, EMI Music, Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group Corp.
"EMI is a proven leader in the emerging digital music landscape and one of the world’s largest and most respected music companies. We're excited to add EMI Music's stellar roster of artists' content to our site and make it available to our community," Chad Hurley, chief executive and co-founder of YouTube, said in a statement.
EMI will make its artists' music videos available at YouTube and YouTube users will also be allowed to use content from select EMI artists in videos they create and post on the site.
Like the agreements YouTube signed with the other record labels, EMI will be able to recognize when its video or audio material is being used in user-generated videos on the Web site and have it removed, if it decides to do so.
"There will be cases where maybe a particular artist doesn't want to participate and the labels need to respect that," an EMI spokesman said. "In those cases, that content will be removed." For example, video and songs by the Beatles will not be available on YouTube.
The deal gives EMI the prospect of getting its music in front of YouTube's more than 160 million users. It also enables EMI to reach people that will watch YouTube clips on their cell phones and televisions.
