A Celebration of Randy Rhoads

On Dec 3rd we will be having A Celebration of Randy Rhoads to celebrate the life of the legendary guitarist. The event will be MC'd by Mr 80's Julian Douglas and there will be a very special performance by Kelle Rhoads being backed by Ronny North and his band. also be a Q&A with the Rhoads family and special guests too. On display will be some cool Rhoads memorabilia. Admission is free and it's all ages.

Congratulations to our good friend Crystal Starr Knighton …she’s the 2011 Hollywood Music Awards winner for Best R&B Vocalist.

Always energetic and engaging Crystal was just in on Wednesday rehearsing for an upcoming show and showing us why she won the Best R&B Vocalist award just hours later. What a voice…

#1 Smooth Jazz artist saxophonist and vocalist Jessy J held rehearsals for her forthcoming show this weekend at the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts. Jessy and the band featuring Eric Mondragon on keys, were working on Jessy’s new material off her NEW release “HOT SAUCE”. I’ll tell you Jessy has talent, chops, and originality.

This is an all star band and they were filling the studio up with their pro sound. Thanks Jessy for a great morning of smooth jazz. Special thanks to our great friend Eric Mondragon of the Hottest Soul Latin Group around - DW3 - for thinking about us for his music projects.

Ronny North 2011 NAMM



Our long time friend Ronny North will be all over NAMM again this year. If you are there, go say hi and tell him Hothouse Studios sent you.

I thought I'd give everyone the update on Ronny’s NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) schedule for this week. He’s looking forward to seeing everyone at his performance when he headlines the NAMM kickoff event on Jan 12^th, 2011 at the Hilton at the Anaheim Convention Center and at the show every day.

He also has some cool new RN stickers and promo 8x10's to sign... when you see him at the show just come up and ask for one, if you want him to sign a photo, not a problem. As most of you know Ronny is always up for getting his picture taken with everyone at these events so if you wanna get a shot together with Ronny, so not a problem. All you have to do is ask. It was great taking photos with everyone at the R-n-R Gangstar Pre NAMM party on Friday.

Ronny will also be doing several actual signing events at the show with special promo shots he had made especially for the sponsors he is signing for (see info below). If you are so inclined you can get all three 2011 RN NAMM promo shots at the show and have your own RN picture collection....

What Is A Rehearsal? Defined and Explained


Studio 1 The Auditorium

Let's go all the way back to the academic definition of music rehearsal first: “Rehearsing a musical composition often involves repeating some passages over and over again until everyone in the ensemble (band or group of musicians) masters them.” Well that's the core of rehearsing, its main foundation... the one that no matter what, you should always comply to.

But music has changed much since these academic days, now rehearsing exceeds these acts, and combines more tasks in itself.

First you should agree that a focused band is the main requisite for a decent rehearsal.

Secondly, be aware that a group rehearsal (or ensemble rehearsal, as stated in the opening definition) is not your practice room or music instrument class! Don't go into the rehearsing studio to develop your individual skills or train your finger position and so on... that's homework mate! Musicians should be prepared for rehearsing as a group and reviewing the tracks over and over is practically the only way to achieve the sound that you want.

Ø Discussion and Analysis

But rehearsing isn't all about playing the part or song silently from start to stop. The meaning of rehearsing hides another concept vital in today's bands: Discussion and Analysis.

When you train a track or a part of it, let’s say from the bridge to the chorus, over and over you are perfecting it, and most of the times “perfection” is about getting it right and playing it smoothly... but there are cases in which, during rehearsal, minor changes to the tracks can happen. A slight change on a note's duration or its pitch can occur when musician calmly discuss and present their point of view on that segment of music being analyzed.

So it’s all about maturing your own product, and that comes in many shapes and flavors. As stated above you can perfect the way all of your band members play their part of the songs, you can perfect the way vocals and back vocals line up and double themselves on the chorus, and many more slight corrections like these, but another thing you can mature is the way the band performs. That’s where the stage-like rehearsal comes into play.

Ø Show Rehearsing

A common practice for bands (and a really important one for bands) is Show Rehearsing. This is, playing your entire concert song list, from start to end and even the “encore” if you’re feeling lucky. This will point out mistakes and problems in your band that you don't want to experience live and also helps you to test the concert song list.

Which problems are these you say? Just play the entire song list and you'll see.

The drummer is tired because track 3 is up tempo and is followed by another really fast tempo song. The bass player needs to switch to percussion in track 6 which leads to enormous waiting time (crowd's hate that), and it gets worst, where you find out that playing all the tracks sequentially can be hard work. So by using these practices in rehearsing you'll definitely get near to perfection, which is the purpose of it.

But remember a crucial aspect: mastery of technical skills DOES NOT replace feeling when playing.

In the other hand, besides Show Rehearsing you have several styles and types of rehearsing and some common practices.

Ø Common Practices

For drum players you should always use a metronome while rehearsing difficult songs (particularly if at the start you're not feeling the tempo, or if the signature is a composite, i.e.: 7/4, 5/4, 3/4, and so on).

Bass players and drummers should build up a strong concept of rhythm section. If need be they could take some time on their own and practice the bass lines and rhythms. And then accordingly to you own band formation, there's several ways to enhance your performance.

Lets’ divide these practices into a small list, with sub-topics:

Ø Rhythm section

As stated, both bass and percussion elements (drummers, conga players, etc...) should work considerably close. That makes a band consistent and the groove becomes solid.

Work with metronome if any of the musicians is not feeling the tempo, but be sure to disconnect it when everyone is groovin'.

Ø Keyboard players

Piano, synth, and so on... Please note that you carry a massive harmonic instrument. It lays down the tune, so be sure to keep the score in mind and practice it a lot.

To synth players or organ players, keep an eye on the tempo and the rhythm section and learn their breaks and tempo changes.

Ø Vocalists

Vocalists play a huge role in today’s music. Lyrics hold certain meaning and messages, which are important in the context of a song/album.

If you're working with vocals and background vocals be sure to reserve some rehearsing time to this. Many times the chorus needs to change because of background vocal integration.

Also, a new trend is to use effects on the voice, so if that's your case, choose some nice gear (foot pedal) and some powerful harmonizer effect machine, and rehearse that part over and over. (You don't want to mess up effects in real time).

Ø Wind instruments

Wind sections should always work together (reeds and brass), and if you have/can, work with the piano score (transposed to your instrument, of course) and keep it well rehearsed. If needed take some time to rehearse this section alone.

Ø Various instruments

It's not possible for this small list to incorporate every instrument possible, so for all of the other instruments. Take the general advises and seek more at other sources, such as maestros or music teachers or even your band members.

Just a final note for those that play solo or play solos in their band. Solos take a huge time rehearsing and should be done in your own individual studio time or at home. When rehearsing with the band be sure to have your solos worked out.

Starving for Gravity Voted Top 100 Unsigned Bands in the U.S.



Starving for Gravity the Melodic Rock group out of Orange County, Ca has been one of our favorite bands since they first began rehearsing at Hothouse Studios and lit up the place.

Now Lucas (vocals), Brad (guitars), Dee (bass), Richard (keys) and Mark (drums) have been voted one of the Top 100 Best Unsigned Bands in the U.S. by Music Connection Magazine in their 19th Annual “Hot 100 Live Unsigned Artists and Bands Poll”.

In addition to the Music Connection staff, freelance journalists, club bookers and other industry professionals determine the results. This is a great accomplishment earned by Starving for Gravity and validates their talent and artistic quality.

Strengthen the Family Unit with Music Rehearsals

There is something special when families use our rehearsal space to practice their music, have fun and at the same time strengthen the ties of their family unit. What a cool thing to be part of that.

The Abellera family and Hothouse Studios has been building our relationship, since we opened the studio doors 7 years ago. I can remember JoJo bringing the kids in to jam for the first time. Justine was only 11, Bryan was still a baby and A.D. had just become a teenager. Boy did they have fun. The kids were so excited.

Now Bryan is playing the drums, Justine is right out front leading the group on guitar and vocals and JoJo (dad) is still playing those bass lines. Watch this video of them covering the Bruno Mars song “Just the Way You Are”.

Lost 80’s Live Roars at Hothouse Rehearsal Studios



Thursday night all of us at the studio were witness to an incredible concert rehearsal in studio 1 “the auditorium”. We had the privileged of hosting tour rehearsals for 80’s powerhouses: When in Rome, Real Life (just in from Australia) and The Escape Club.

The Escape Club performed their number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart "Wild, Wild West" then fresh in from Melbourne, Australia Real Life breaks into an incredible version of "Send Me an Angel" then our good friend Rob Juarez and When in Rome started playing "The Promise" their monster single from their self-titled debut album. “The Promise” was an instant success, barely missing the Top Ten in the United States, peaking at #11.

The Lost 80’s Live show with When in Rome, Real Life, The Escape Club, The Motels, Animotion, A Flock of Seagulls, Dramarama and Gene Loves Jezebel just performed this weekend to sold out shows at the Mandalay Bay Hotel (The Beach) in Las Vegas, Nevada. The reviews of the show are awesome.

We thank two of our oldest and dearest friends, John Easdale of Dramarama and Johnny Vatos of Oingo Boingo for recommending us to their friends.

Pre-Production Rehearsals Saves You Cash

Whether your band has had no gigs or one hundred, making the decision to record an album is an incredibly big and important step. Bands cannot book good gigs without a demo of some sort at the very least and the best way to get your fans to come see you again is with the constant reminder that only your CD playing in their car can do.

When the decision to record is made by a band, there needs to be a timeline put in place for recording and a lot of work needs to go into making sure that when you get to the recording studio you can be as efficient as possible. By doing your homework ahead of time, you can save yourself quite a bit of money once you get into the studio.

Starving for Gravity Interviewed by Performer Magazine at Hothouse Studios

Our good friends in the band Starving for Gravity were interviewed by Performer Magazine last night in studio one (the auditorium) here at Hothouse Rehearsal Studios. The interview was fantastic. Part live performance (which they rocked) and part sit around and talk about their new album and the future of the music industry and how they fit into it. One of Music Connections “Hottest 100 Artists” Starving for Gravity recently performed live at the Covenant House, a Hollywood, CA, facility that serves homeless and at-risk youths. It was the first live performance ever held there in a room created via a substantial donation from Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx. The premiere event was attended by many of the residents and staff of the Covenant House. Starving for Gravity not only entertained the group for almost two hours, they answered questions and allowed a couple kids to play along with them.

Wow, huh?

So Edward C's brother, Ronaldo came down to watch Ed's band rehearse and was so pleased by what he saw and experienced that he dropped $400 in prepaid rehearsal minutes on the rehearsal phone. Wow, huh?

We talked for a bit and what he told me was that not only is he a great fan and supporter of music, but he was extremely happy to see his little brother doing something fun, safe and non-get-yourself-into-trouble-ish, in a fun, safe and nurturing environment, and that he wanted to help that continue by prepaying rehearsal time for his brother. If only more older brothers were so encouraging.

Thank you Ronaldo, and be assured Hothouse Studios will continue to provide Eddie, Damien, and Andrew a safe haven to develop their music.

Song Arrangement Rehearsal
Crucial to Successful Live Performance



There are various types of rehearsals and a song arrangement rehearsal I believe is crucial to the success of a live performance and a solid recording.

As a band, forging ahead with a new song is great until you realize that you aren’t 100% sure you know what the other members are doing. It’s even more frustrating when you realize the song is good but is lacking something to make it great. By scheduling a song arrangement rehearsal, a band can work out these things in a more controlled environment. Read the entire article here.
